Mātauranga

Mātauranga is at the head of the St John’s Eagle because it represents our knowledge and our learning. This not simply academic knowledge, but knowledge about ourselves, our faith and the cultures that form the basis of our College community.

“Whāia te mātauranga hei oranga mō koutou.”

This whakatauki refers to the importance of learning for it is key to our wellbeing.  If we follow the path of learning, the world will be our oyster.

Aroha and Whakapono

Whakapono (faith) provides the foundation for which we exist as a school, so it is at the foot of the St John’s eagle.  The major expression of our faith is made through Aroha (love) because we are called by Christ to love our neighbour as ourselves.  Our neighbours are those people we encounter each day, especially the marginalised and the vulnerable.

Kaitiakitanga and Manaakitanga

Kaitiakitanga and manaakitanga are expressions of aroha.  They form the wings of our St John’s Eagle because we wrap these wings around our community.

Kaitiakitanga (stewardship or guardianship) is one of the principles of Catholic Social Teaching.  It is about being accountable and caring for the environment and the taonga (treasures) within it. This taonga includes our students, our school, and the people in our wider community, as well as the natural resources we are responsible for taking care of.

Kaitiakitanga and Manaakitanga continued

"Toitu te marae a Tane, Toitu te marae a Tangaroa, Toitu te iwi."

If the land is well and the sea is well, the people will thrive.

Manaakitanga (hospitality) is about our school being a welcoming and safe place where the diginity (mana) of each individual is recognised and respected.

“He aroha whakatō, he aroha puta mai."

If kindness is sown then kindness you shall receive.
