Career Pathways

The aim of career education and career guidance at St John’s College is to help students to develop their career management competencies as they transition through school to further learning, work and life.

We wish for every student to leave school with a personalised career plan. In the junior school, students develop a sense of self-awareness and knowledge of the opportunities available in the world of work. In the senior school we focus on the ability to make decisions, set goals and take action.

The Careers Department works with teachers, Deans and Senior Management to provide a range of services, opportunities and experiences so that students can make informed choices as they transition. Subject selection is a key time for these conversations.

The school invites representatives from Universities, Institutes of Technology, the Defence Forces, Police and other private providers to make presentations to the boys about the multitude of opportunities available to them. The NZ Careers Expo in May is tailored to Year 12 and 13 students where tertiary providers, industry training providers, and business are available to answer students’ questions directly.

Students are encouraged to take ownership of their career plans and develop their career management competencies throughout their time at SJC. This will ensure when leaving the safety and predictability of secondary school-life, they are set to make wise decisions for the future.
